Introduction

Component 3 is the Team Project — the collaborative component of 9239. It is worth 40 marks, made of two individually-submitted pieces:

• an individual Presentation (30 marks), and
• an individual Reflective Paper (10 marks).

The defining rule — read this carefully: although you work in a team to identify the problem and divide up perspectives, team presentations are NOT permitted. Each candidate:

• presents individually (the presentation is your own, delivered alone, up to 10 minutes), and
• submits their own reflective paper (up to 800 words).

So the team is the starting point, not the thing assessed. You are marked as an individual throughout.

Teams are 2–5 members (three or four tend to work best — two gives limited perspective diversity; five can be hard to coordinate).

The assessment objectives (this is the key difference from other components):

AO3 (Communication) is weighted most heavily here — more than in any other component — because the presentation rewards clear structure, effective visuals, audience awareness and delivery. And collaboration is assessed only in Component 3 (through the reflective paper), so this is the one place teamwork skills count toward your grade.

Even though you are assessed individually, the quality of the collaboration shapes both your project and (directly) your reflective paper. Effective teams organise deliberately.

Three foundations of an effective team:

1. Shared goal — everyone agrees what the project is trying to achieve (a clearly defined problem and a common understanding of the task).
2. Roles and responsibilities — who does what, and by when. Typical roles: a coordinator/timekeeper, a research organiser, a note-keeper for decisions, etc. Roles can rotate, but responsibilities must be clear.
3. Communication and accountability — regular check-ins, honest updates, and a way to resolve disagreement constructively.

Why this matters for marks (AO2): collaboration is assessed only in Component 3, through the reflective paper. If your team collaborates well (and you keep a short record of how), you will have genuine, specific material to reflect on — what worked, what didn't, and what you would change. A team that never really functioned as a team leaves you with little honest reflection to write.

Keep a brief collaboration log. Note key decisions, who did what, moments of disagreement and how they were resolved, and how your own contribution developed. This is not assessed itself, but it is the raw material for a strong reflective paper — and it prevents the vague, generic reflection examiners reject.

Manage the team dynamic proactively. Agree early how decisions are made and how you will handle a member who falls behind. Problems left unaddressed become the things you (honestly) reflect on later — better to manage them than to be surprised by them.

The team's task is to identify a local problem that has genuine global relevance. This is the hardest part of the whole component — and getting it right makes everything else possible.

What this means:

• Local problem — a specific, real problem in a definable community, place or context (your town, region, school community, city). It should be concrete enough to research and propose solutions for.
• Global relevance — the same kind of problem matters across borders, cultures or populations; your local case is an instance of a worldwide issue.

The two-part test:

1. Is the problem specific and local enough to research concretely and propose real solutions?
2. Does it connect to a global issue — would people in other countries recognise a version of it?

Examples of the local↔global link:

Why "local + global" matters: a purely local problem ("our canteen menu is boring") has no global relevance and cannot generate the range of perspectives the project needs. A purely global problem ("world hunger") is too broad to research concretely or solve. The sweet spot is a local instance of a genuinely global issue — small enough to act on, significant enough to view from many perspectives.

Once the problem is chosen, the team writes one shared problem statement — and then allocates a distinct perspective to each member.

The single problem statement:

• It is shared by the whole team — everyone is addressing the same problem.
• It must be broad enough that members can approach it from different perspectives, yet focused enough to be researchable.
• It usually frames the problem and invites solutions, e.g. "How can our city reduce the harm caused by plastic waste on our beaches?"

Allocating distinct perspectives:

• Each member takes a different, genuine perspective on the shared problem — often generated by applying different themes (economic, environmental, ethical, political, social, scientific/technological).
• The perspectives must be distinct, not overlapping, so each member's research and proposed solution is their own.

Each member then researches their own perspective and develops their own proposed solution (the next subtopic) — and presents it individually.

The Component 3 sequence:

1. Team setup (this subtopic): form the team, agree roles/goals, identify the local-with-global-relevance problem, write one shared problem statement, allocate distinct perspectives.
2. Individual research & solution: each member researches their assigned perspective and develops a proposed solution (with feasibility and limitations).
3. Individual presentation (30 marks): each member presents their perspective and solution alone — audience-aware, structured, with visuals and effective delivery (AO1 + AO3).
4. Individual reflective paper (10 marks): each member reflects on the team's collaboration and their own learning and contribution (AO2).

What this introduction sets up:

• A strong shared problem and a genuinely distinct perspective give your research and presentation something solid to build on (AO1).
• Deliberate, well-managed collaboration gives your reflective paper honest, specific material (AO2).

So the team stage is not a formality — it is the foundation on which your individual marks are built. Time invested in choosing the right problem, writing a good problem statement, and setting up genuine collaboration pays off directly in the two individually-assessed pieces that follow.
