Finding two genuinely contrasting perspectives
The essay needs at least two real opposing worldviews — not two shades of the same view.
Component 2 is built on contrasting perspectives. Your essay must explore at least two genuinely opposing worldviews on your question — and the quality of those perspectives sets the ceiling on your AO1 marks (63% of the essay).
What counts as a perspective. A perspective is a coherent worldview made of argument, evidence and assumptions — e.g. an economic-development perspective or an environmental perspective. It is more than a single opinion or a single source.
"Genuinely contrasting" means they really disagree — they reach different conclusions on the same question, for different reasons:
- ✗ Two versions of the same view ("tourism is good for jobs" / "tourism boosts the economy") — these are not contrasting.
- ✓ Opposing worldviews ("tourism drives development" vs "tourism erodes culture and environment") — genuinely contrasting.
Generate perspectives with themes. Apply different themes (culture, economics, environment, ethics, politics, science, technology) to your issue — each lens tends to produce a different perspective:
- Issue: should governments tax meat? → environmental perspective (cut emissions) vs economic/freedom perspective (cost, choice, farming livelihoods) vs ethical perspective (animal welfare).
Aim for balance. Choose perspectives that are roughly comparable in strength so a fair, two-sided essay is possible. If one side is obviously right, the essay tips into one-sidedness.
The test: for each perspective, state its conclusion, one core argument, and the assumption it rests on. If you can do this for two opposing perspectives, you have a researchable, two-sided essay.
- Need at least two genuinely opposing perspectives on the same question.
- A perspective = a coherent worldview (argument + evidence + assumptions), not one opinion.
- Generate perspectives by applying different themes to the issue.
- Choose perspectives of comparable strength so the essay can be balanced.
