Types of water resource and the global water store
Only ~2.5% of all water is fresh, and most of that is frozen or underground — so usable surface fresh water is a tiny fraction of the total.
A water resource is any body of water that is useful, or potentially useful, to people. The syllabus lists the main types you must know:

The key idea is scarcity within abundance. There is a huge volume of water on Earth, but the share that is fresh AND accessible is tiny:
So when people talk about a "water crisis", they rarely mean the planet is running out of water in total — they mean the fresh, accessible portion is small, unevenly shared and under rising demand.
