Factors affecting the supply of water — physical factors
Climate, geology (aquifers), drainage patterns and relief set the natural volume and quality of water a region has before any human action.
The supply of water means both the volume available and its quality (how clean and usable it is). Physical factors set the natural starting point — what a region has before people build anything.

| Geology (rock type) | Permeable, porous rocks (chalk, sandstone, limestone) store water underground as aquifers, providing a reliable groundwater supply tapped by wells/boreholes. Impermeable rock stores little, so supply depends on surface water. Geology also affects quality — water through limestone is 'hard'. |
| Drainage patterns | The arrangement of rivers and the size of the drainage basin determine how much surface water collects and where. A large basin with many tributaries (e.g. a major river) concentrates a large, usable flow; sparse drainage means scattered, limited surface supply. |
| Relief (topography) | Mountains force air to rise and cool, giving high relief (orographic) rainfall on windward slopes — upland areas are often water-rich 'water towers'. Relief also creates natural reservoir sites in valleys and the head needed to move water downhill by gravity. |
These factors interact: a wet upland on permeable rock with a large drainage basin has a naturally abundant, reliable supply; an arid lowland on impermeable rock has very little, regardless of effort.
