Rainforest vegetation: structure, adaptations and biodiversity
Hot, wet, aseasonal conditions produce a layered, evergreen forest of very high biodiversity, with plants adapted to compete for light and shed heavy rain.
Tropical rainforest grows where it is hot all year (around 26-28 degrees C) with high, evenly distributed rainfall (commonly over 2000 mm a year) and no real dry season. Continuous warmth and moisture mean growth never stops, so the forest is evergreen and packs in an enormous variety of species — it has the highest biodiversity of any terrestrial ecosystem.
The forest is layered (stratified) because plants compete for light. Learn the layers top to bottom:

Adaptations you must be able to name and explain:
- Drip tips — leaves taper to a point so heavy rain runs off quickly, preventing rot and the growth of algae/fungi on the leaf.
- Buttress roots — wide, flared roots that support tall trees in the shallow soil (roots cannot anchor deep) and increase the surface area for nutrient uptake near the surface.
- Lianas — woody climbers that root in the ground but use tree trunks to climb rapidly to the light, saving the cost of a thick stem.
- Epiphytes — plants (orchids, bromeliads) that grow ON branches high in the canopy to reach light, taking moisture and nutrients from the air and rain, not the soil.
- Thin, smooth bark and broad evergreen leaves — no need for thick protective bark or leaf-fall in a frost-free, aseasonal climate.
The layering, the year-round growth and the variety of niches together explain the forest's extraordinary biodiversity — the point examiners want linked back to the constant warm, wet climate.
