Population pressure and land-use change
Rising population intensifies shifting cultivation and pushes farming and settlement into forest and savanna — the underlying driver of most other threats.
The first challenge is population pressure: as the population of tropical regions grows, demand for food, fuelwood, land and resources rises, and land use changes to meet it. This is the underlying driver behind much of the exploitation that follows.
- Shifting cultivation intensifies. Traditional shifting cultivation (slash-and-burn) is sustainable only when the fallow period is long enough for the forest and soil to recover. Population pressure shortens the fallow, so plots are re-cleared before recovery, soils are exhausted and the cleared area never regenerates to full forest.
- Agricultural expansion. Land is cleared to grow more food and cash crops. Subsistence farming spreads, and — increasingly — large commercial farms replace forest and savanna (linked to monoculture below).
- Settlement and infrastructure. Growing populations need towns, roads and energy. New roads in particular open up previously inaccessible forest to loggers, farmers and miners, so a single road can trigger a wave of further clearance ("fishbone" deforestation).
The mechanism to remember: more people → more demand for land/resources → land-use change (clearance, intensification) → pressure on the tropical ecosystem. Population pressure rarely destroys an ecosystem on its own, but it sets off the exploitation and degradation that do.
