Components of population structure and the dependency ratio
Population structure means age + sex composition; the dependency ratio compares dependants to the working-age population — learn the formula and a worked calculation.
Population structure is the composition of a population, broken down by age and sex (gender). It is the single most useful summary of a population because age and sex shape everything from the number of school places needed to the size of the future workforce and the pension bill.
The population is usually divided into three broad age groups:

The economically active population (the 15–64 group) supports the two groups of dependants (the young and the elderly). The balance between them is captured by the dependency ratio.
The dependency ratio measures how many dependants there are for every 100 people of working age:
Worked calculation. Imagine a country with 30 million people aged 0–14, 5 million aged 65+ and 65 million aged 15–64:
So there are about 54 dependants for every 100 workers. A high dependency ratio (a large share of young or old) puts a heavier burden on the working population; a low ratio means a larger share of people are of working age. You can also split it into youthful (child) dependency and aged (elderly) dependency to show WHICH group dominates — important because youthful and ageing populations create very different problems (see the impacts section).
A note on "sex" vs "gender": the syllabus uses both terms. In demography the pyramid splits the population by biological sex (male/female), so the sex ratio (males per 100 females) is the technical measure; "gender structure" is used loosely for the same male/female split.
