Types of international migration
Classify by free choice (voluntary vs forced) and by duration (temporary vs permanent) — and define each term precisely.
Migration is the permanent or semi-permanent movement of people from one place to another. International migration crosses a national border. The syllabus asks you to classify it in two ways: by whether the move is chosen and by how long it lasts.
1. Voluntary vs non-voluntary (forced)
- Voluntary migration is movement made by free choice, usually to improve quality of life. It divides into:
- Economic migration — moving for work, higher wages or better employment prospects (e.g. a worker moving to a Gulf state, or Mexico to the USA).
- Social migration — moving for social reasons such as joining family (family reunion), marriage, retirement or a better lifestyle.
- Non-voluntary (forced) migration is movement people are compelled to make, usually to escape danger. The two key terms are:
- Refugee — a person who has been forced to leave their country and has crossed an international border because of war, persecution or disaster, and cannot safely return.
- Asylum seeker — a person who has fled their country and is applying for protection (refugee status) in another country, but whose claim has not yet been decided.
2. Temporary vs permanent
- Temporary migration is intended to last for a limited time — e.g. seasonal agricultural workers, fixed-term contract labour in the Gulf, or international students.
- Permanent migration is intended to be long-term or for life — e.g. emigrating to settle and gain citizenship.
| Classification | Type | Defining feature | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| By choice | Voluntary — economic | Free choice, for work/wages | Mexican workers → USA |
| By choice | Voluntary — social | Free choice, social reasons | Family reunion, retirement abroad |
| By choice | Forced — refugee | Compelled, has crossed a border | Syrians fleeing to Turkey |
| By choice | Forced — asylum seeker | Compelled, claim not yet decided | Person applying for refugee status in Germany |
| By duration | Temporary | Limited, intended period | Gulf contract workers; students |
| By duration | Permanent | Long-term / for life | Settling and gaining citizenship |
These categories overlap: an economic migrant can be temporary or permanent, and a refugee may eventually become a permanent migrant. The skill is to use the term that fits the person's situation precisely.
- International migration = movement of people across a national border.
- Voluntary = free choice: economic (work/wages) or social (family, marriage, retirement, lifestyle).
- Forced/non-voluntary = compelled: refugees (already crossed a border) and asylum seekers (claim pending).
- Temporary (seasonal/contract/students) vs permanent (settling for life).
- Categories overlap — choose the term that matches the person precisely.
