Physical causes of river flooding
Floods happen when discharge exceeds channel capacity — driven by heavy/prolonged rain, snowmelt and the basin's own characteristics.
A river floods when its discharge exceeds the capacity of its channel, so water overtops the banks (bankfull discharge) onto the floodplain. The physical causes all increase discharge or speed water to the channel:
- Precipitation — duration and intensity. Prolonged rainfall (e.g. a monsoon or a slow-moving depression) saturates the basin so that further rain runs straight off. Intense rainfall (e.g. a convectional storm) exceeds the soil's infiltration capacity, generating rapid overland flow and flash floods.
- Snowmelt and ice melt. A rapid spring thaw, especially when the ground is still frozen and impermeable, releases large volumes of water quickly. Glacial melt adds to discharge in summer.
- Drainage basin characteristics. Impermeable rock and soils, steep slopes, sparse vegetation, a circular basin shape, high drainage density and high antecedent moisture (the basin is already wet) all speed water to the channel and raise the flood peak.
The most dangerous floods usually combine factors — for example, heavy rain falling on an already-saturated basin, or rain on top of rapid snowmelt.
- Flood = discharge exceeds channel capacity → water overtops the banks.
- Prolonged rain saturates the basin; intense rain exceeds infiltration capacity (flash floods).
- Rapid snowmelt/ice melt on frozen ground releases water quickly.
- Impermeable, steep, circular basins with high antecedent moisture peak fastest.
- Worst floods combine factors (rain on saturated ground; rain plus snowmelt).
