Erosion processes: the four you must name
Hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition and solution wear away the channel — learn what each one physically does.
Rivers erode their bed and banks in four main ways. Each must be named and explained — 'the river erodes it' is never enough.

A fifth process, cavitation, occurs in fast, turbulent flow: tiny air bubbles form and collapse against the channel sides with small shock waves that gradually weaken the rock.
The key distinction examiners test: corrasion (= abrasion) is mechanical wearing by the load; corrosion (= solution) is chemical dissolving. The near-identical names trap students every year.
- Hydraulic action = force of water + air pressure widening cracks.
- Abrasion/corrasion = load scrapes and grinds the bed and banks (mechanical).
- Attrition = load particles wear EACH OTHER down (not the channel).
- Solution/corrosion = chemical dissolving of soluble rock (chemical).
- Cavitation = collapsing air bubbles weaken the channel in fast flow.
