Distribution and conditions: where and why tropical cyclones form
Tropical cyclones form over the warm tropical oceans in narrow latitude belts — they need a hot sea, enough spin from the Coriolis effect (so not at the equator) and low wind shear, which is why they cluster in predictable regions and seasons.
Tropical cyclones are intense, rotating low-pressure storm systems that form over warm tropical oceans. They go by three regional names — hurricanes (North Atlantic and north-east Pacific), typhoons (north-west Pacific) and cyclones (Indian Ocean and around Australia) — but they are the same phenomenon. Their global distribution is not random: it traces the parts of the ocean where the conditions for formation are met.
The conditions required (learn these — they ARE the distribution):

Seasonality. Because they need the sea at its warmest, cyclones have a clear season — in the northern hemisphere mainly late summer to autumn (e.g. Atlantic hurricane season ~June–November, peaking September), and the opposite months in the southern hemisphere. This seasonality is itself an examinable pattern.
The global belts. Putting the conditions together gives the recognisable distribution:
- North Atlantic / Caribbean / Gulf of Mexico — hurricanes.
- North-west Pacific (Philippines, Japan, China, SE Asia) — typhoons; the most active basin on Earth.
- North Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal, Arabian Sea) — cyclones; the Bay of Bengal is especially deadly because of its funnel shape and dense, low-lying deltas.
- South Indian Ocean and around northern Australia / South Pacific — cyclones.
Note the gaps the conditions explain: there are almost no cyclones in the South Atlantic or south-east Pacific (seas too cool / unfavourable), and a band along the equator is free of them (insufficient Coriolis effect).
- Hurricanes (Atlantic/NE Pacific), typhoons (NW Pacific) and cyclones (Indian Ocean/Australia) are the same storm named by region.
- Conditions: sea ≥ ~26.5°C to ~60–70 m depth, latitude ~5–20°, low wind shear, unstable humid converging air.
- They do NOT form at the equator — the Coriolis effect there is too weak (zero) to start rotation.
- Clear seasonality — they form when the sea is warmest (late summer/autumn in each hemisphere).
- Main belts: N Atlantic/Caribbean, NW Pacific (most active), N Indian Ocean (Bay of Bengal — deadliest), S Indian Ocean/Australia.
