Agricultural pollution: fertilisers, eutrophication, pesticides and slurry
Modern farming pollutes rural water and soil through nitrate and phosphate fertiliser runoff (which triggers eutrophication), pesticides and herbicides that bioaccumulate up food chains, and slurry and organic waste from intensive livestock.
The first job in 12.2 is to identify the main TYPES of rural pollution precisely, because almost all of it originates from agriculture.
Nitrate and phosphate fertiliser runoff.
- To raise yields, farmers apply artificial fertilisers rich in nitrates and phosphates. When more is applied than crops can take up, rain washes the surplus off fields as runoff (and it leaches into groundwater).
- These nutrients enrich rivers, lakes and reservoirs, setting off eutrophication — the over-enrichment of water that ends in oxygen loss and the death of aquatic life. Nitrate in drinking water is also a human-health concern.
Pesticides and herbicides — bioaccumulation.
- Chemicals sprayed to kill pests and weeds can persist in the environment. Persistent ones (the classic case is DDT, exposed in Rachel Carson's Silent Spring) bioaccumulate — they build up in the tissues of organisms — and biomagnify — becoming more concentrated at each step up the food chain, harming top predators (e.g. thinning birds' eggshells).
Slurry and organic waste.
- Intensive livestock farming produces large volumes of slurry (liquid manure) and other organic waste. If it leaks or is spread to excess, it pollutes watercourses, adds nutrients (worsening eutrophication) and de-oxygenates water as it decomposes.
