Divergent / constructive boundaries: pulling apart and building new crust
At divergent boundaries plates move apart under tension; magma rises to make new crust by sea-floor spreading, with faulting and rifting as the surface tears.
At a divergent (constructive) boundary two plates move apart. Convection in the asthenosphere drags the plates away from each other, the crust above is stretched under tension, and the reduced pressure lets the hot mantle below partially melt. The magma rises to fill the gap, cools and solidifies as new crust — which is why the boundary is called constructive.
Three processes operate here, and you should be able to separate them:

Sea-floor spreading is the headline process. As the plates separate, basaltic magma wells up along the ridge, solidifies, and is then carried away from the ridge on both sides as the next batch of magma rises. The result is a symmetrical pattern: the youngest crust is at the ridge and the oldest is furthest away (confirmed by the matching stripes of magnetic reversals in the rock). This is the mechanism that physically adds crust to the Earth's surface.
Because the crust above is brittle, it cannot stretch smoothly — it breaks. Faulting is this fracturing, and where a long block of crust slips down between two roughly parallel faults you get rifting. On land this produces a rift valley; under the ocean it produces the central rift along the crest of a mid-ocean ridge.
