Types of mass movement: heaves, flows, slides and falls
Classify mass movement by HOW the material moves and HOW MUCH water is involved — from slow creep to a free-falling rockfall.
Mass movement is the downslope movement of weathered rock, soil and debris under the influence of gravity. The syllabus classifies it into four types, which differ in speed, water content and the mechanism of movement:
- Heaves. Very slow movement (a few mm–cm a year) caused by the repeated expansion and contraction of soil — for example wetting/drying or freezing/thawing. Each particle is lifted at right angles to the slope and falls back vertically under gravity, so the soil slowly creeps downhill. Evidence includes tilted poles and curved tree trunks.
- Flows (mudflow, debris flow). Water-saturated material that behaves like a fluid and flows downslope. A mudflow is fine, saturated material; a debris flow carries coarser rock and debris. Flows are often fast and very destructive because they have high water content and can travel long distances.
- Slides (landslides, rotational slides/slumps). A coherent block of material moves along a clear failure surface. A landslide (translational slide) slides along a roughly straight plane (often a bedding plane or fault). A rotational slide or slump moves along a curved, concave surface, so the block rotates backwards as it slips.
- Falls (rock). Material detaches from a steep cliff or rock face and falls, bounces or rolls under gravity — a rockfall. Common where freeze–thaw weathering loosens jointed rock on steep slopes.
A useful way to remember the spectrum is by water content and speed: heave is dry and very slow; slides are intermediate; flows are wet and fast; falls are dry but very rapid because the material is in free fall.
- Mass movement = downslope movement of rock/soil/debris under gravity.
- Heaves: very slow soil creep from repeated expansion/contraction (wetting–drying, freeze–thaw).
- Flows: saturated material (mudflow = fine, debris flow = coarser); fast and destructive.
- Slides: coherent block on a failure surface — landslide (straight plane) vs rotational slump (curved surface).
- Falls: rock detaches and free-falls from a steep cliff (rockfall), often after freeze–thaw.
- Classify by movement type AND water content (dry/slow → wet/fast).
