What coral is — and why reefs matter
Coral is an animal that builds a slow-growing limestone reef; reefs are biodiversity hotspots that protect coasts and support fisheries and tourism.
A coral reef is a wave-resistant ridge built up over thousands of years from the limestone (calcium carbonate, CaCO₃) skeletons of countless tiny animals called coral polyps.
A coral polyp is a small, soft-bodied marine animal (a relative of sea anemones and jellyfish) with a ring of stinging tentacles around its mouth. Each polyp secretes a hard cup-shaped skeleton beneath itself. Polyps live in colonies, and as old polyps die new ones grow on top of the old skeletons. Over time these accumulated skeletons cement together into the rocky reef framework.
Two things examiners want you to stress:
- Coral is an ANIMAL, not a plant. It captures tiny plankton with its tentacles, but it gets most of its energy from algae living inside it (see the symbiosis section).
- Reefs grow VERY slowly — typically only a few millimetres to centimetres per year. This is why damage is so serious: a reef destroyed in a single storm or by blast fishing may take decades to centuries to recover, if at all.
Why coral reefs matter (learn these — they justify why management is worthwhile):

The largest reef system, the Great Barrier Reef off north-eastern Australia, stretches for well over 2,000 km and is the clearest real-world example to use — it is a biodiversity hotspot, a huge tourism earner, and has suffered repeated mass-bleaching events linked to warming seas.
