Waves: generation, characteristics, and constructive vs destructive
Wave energy comes from wind acting over a fetch; constructive waves build beaches (swash-dominant), destructive waves erode (backwash-dominant), and refraction concentrates energy on headlands.
Waves are the main source of energy at the coast, and that energy is generated by the wind dragging across the sea surface. Three factors control how much energy a wave carries:
- Fetch — the uninterrupted distance of open water the wind blows over. A long fetch (e.g. thousands of kilometres of open ocean) builds large, high-energy waves; a short, sheltered fetch gives small, low-energy waves.
- Wind speed — stronger winds transfer more energy to the water.
- Wind duration — the longer the wind blows, the more energy the waves accumulate.
As a wave reaches shallow water near the coast, friction with the seabed slows its base, the wave steepens and topples, and it breaks. The water rushing UP the beach is the swash; the water draining BACK down under gravity is the backwash. The balance between swash and backwash decides whether the wave builds or destroys.

Wave refraction is the bending of wave crests as they approach an irregular coastline. Waves slow first in the shallow water off headlands, so the crests bend to become parallel with the coast; this concentrates wave energy on the headlands (more erosion) and spreads (disperses) it in the bays (more deposition). Refraction is why headlands are attacked and bays accumulate beaches.
- Wave energy is set by fetch + wind speed + wind duration; long fetch = high-energy waves.
- Swash = water rushing UP the beach; backwash = water draining BACK down.
- Constructive = low-energy, swash-dominant → builds beaches; destructive = high-energy, backwash-dominant → erodes.
- Constructive waves are low and long (few/min); destructive waves are tall and steep (many/min).
- Refraction bends wave crests, concentrating energy on headlands and spreading it in bays.
