Coastal processes: how process shapes form
Every coastal landform is the product of erosion, transport, deposition and sub-aerial weathering acting on rock of a given type and structure under a given wave energy.
A coastline is a system, and its landforms are the visible result of the balance between energy inputs and the resistance of the land. To explain any landform you must name the process that made it and the conditions that favoured it. Four families of process do the work:

Two further controls decide which family wins:
- Wave energy. Destructive waves (high, frequent, strong backwash) erode and remove sediment, favouring erosional landforms; constructive waves (low, infrequent, strong swash) push sediment up the beach, favouring deposition. High-energy, exposed coasts erode; low-energy, sheltered coasts (bays, estuaries) accumulate sediment.
- Rock type and structure (geology). Resistant rock (granite, limestone, chalk) forms cliffs and headlands; weak rock (clay, sand) is cut back into bays. Structure — the way rock bands and joints/faults are arranged relative to the coast — controls whether you get a smooth coast or alternating headlands and bays (see concordant vs discordant below).
So the golden rule for the exam: process + condition → landform. "Hydraulic action and abrasion attack a line of weakness in resistant rock under high wave energy, opening a cave" earns marks; "the sea made a cave" does not.

- Marine erosion: hydraulic action, abrasion, attrition, corrosion/solution.
- Destructive waves (strong backwash) erode; constructive waves (strong swash) deposit.
- Resistant rock → cliffs/headlands; weak rock → bays; structure controls the plan view.
- Sub-aerial weathering and mass movement weaken cliffs from the land side.
