Impacts on water resources: drought, glacial melt and scarcity
Warming intensifies drought and water scarcity in dry regions, while glacial melt first boosts then sharply reduces river flow — threatening the billions who rely on meltwater-fed rivers.
Water is the first resource through which most people FEEL climate change, because warming changes both how much precipitation falls and where it goes.
Drought and water scarcity.
- Higher temperatures increase evaporation from soils, reservoirs and rivers, so even where rainfall is unchanged, less water is available — this is the aridity effect.
- Shifting rainfall patterns make many already-dry regions drier (the subtropics, the Mediterranean, the Sahel), lengthening and deepening droughts.
- The result is water scarcity: not enough clean, reliable water for drinking, sanitation and irrigation — affecting health, agriculture and economic activity.
Glacial melt and the 'water towers'.
- Mountain glaciers and snowpack act as natural reservoirs, releasing meltwater into rivers in the dry season. The Himalayas ('the water tower of Asia') and the Andes feed rivers (Ganges, Indus, Brahmaputra) that supply water to around two billion people.
- As glaciers warm, melt FIRST increases river flow (more meltwater, more flood risk), but as the glaciers SHRINK, the long-term supply falls sharply, threatening dry-season water for irrigation, hydropower and cities.
Too much and too little.
- A warmer atmosphere holds more moisture, so climate change brings both more intense floods AND more severe droughts — often in the same region in different seasons — making water supply harder to manage.
