The natural vs the enhanced greenhouse effect
The natural greenhouse effect makes Earth habitable (~+33°C). Humans adding greenhouse gases strengthen it — the enhanced greenhouse effect — trapping extra outgoing heat and warming the planet.
Understanding future climate starts with the difference between the natural greenhouse effect (which is good and essential) and the enhanced greenhouse effect (the human-caused EXTRA warming that drives climate change).
The natural greenhouse effect — how it works.
- The Sun delivers energy as shortwave (solar) radiation. Most passes through the atmosphere and is absorbed by the Earth's surface, which warms.
- The warm surface re-emits energy as longwave (infrared) radiation back towards space.
- Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere absorb some of this outgoing longwave radiation and re-radiate it in all directions, including back down to the surface.
- This trapping of heat keeps the surface about 33°C warmer than it would be with no greenhouse gases — without it, Earth's average temperature would be roughly −18°C and largely frozen. The natural greenhouse effect is therefore essential for life.
The enhanced greenhouse effect — the human change.
- Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have increased the concentration of greenhouse gases — burning fossil fuels, clearing forests, farming livestock and using fertilisers.
- More greenhouse gas means more outgoing longwave radiation is absorbed and re-radiated downwards, so the lower atmosphere and surface warm further. This extra warming is the enhanced greenhouse effect.
- The result is the global warming already observed (~+1.1–1.2°C above the pre-industrial average) and the further warming projected for the future.
