The two pillars: mitigation versus adaptation
Mitigation reduces or prevents emissions (tackles the cause); adaptation adjusts to unavoidable impacts (tackles the effects). An effective response needs both, because some warming is already locked in.
Every response to climate change is one of two kinds, and 11.3 expects you to define and contrast them precisely.
Mitigation — tackling the CAUSE. Mitigation means reducing or preventing greenhouse-gas emissions (or removing greenhouse gases from the atmosphere), so that the amount of future warming is limited. It addresses the cause of climate change.
Adaptation — tackling the EFFECTS. Adaptation means adjusting our lives, economies and infrastructure to cope with the impacts that can no longer be avoided. Because past emissions have already committed the planet to some warming, adaptation is unavoidable even if all emissions stopped tomorrow.
Why we need both.
- Mitigation alone is not enough: even with deep cuts, warming already 'in the system' will still bring impacts that must be adapted to.
- Adaptation alone is not enough: if emissions keep rising, impacts eventually become too large and costly to adapt to. Adaptation buys time; mitigation fixes the cause.
- The two are complementary, not alternatives — the best answers stress this.
