Arid vegetation: low productivity, low biodiversity, slow cycling
Water shortage — not warmth — is the limiting factor, so arid environments support only sparse, slow-growing vegetation with few species and a very slow nutrient cycle.
Hot arid (true desert) and hot semi-arid (desert margin) environments are warm enough for plant growth all year, but they are starved of water: rainfall is low (often well under 250 mm a year in true deserts), unreliable and quickly lost to very high evaporation under clear, hot skies. Because water is the limiting factor, the vegetation is fundamentally different from the lush, warmth-driven rainforest of Topic 7.
Three linked characteristics define it:
- Low biomass productivity. With little water, plants grow slowly and there is far less living material per square metre than in a forest or even a grassland. Plant cover is sparse and patchy — bare ground separates individual plants, which space themselves out to avoid competing for scarce water.
- Limited biodiversity. Only species that can survive extreme water stress (and large day-to-night temperature swings) can live here, so the range of species is small compared with the rainforest. Semi-arid margins are a little more diverse than the driest deserts, but both are species-poor.
- Limited (slow) nutrient cycling. Few plants means little leaf litter, and the lack of moisture slows decomposition, so dead matter breaks down slowly and nutrients are recycled slowly. Combined with low rainfall, this keeps the system's productivity low.
So the harsh climate constrains the whole ecosystem: low and unreliable rainfall plus high evaporation cap how much vegetation can grow, how many species can survive, and how fast nutrients can cycle. The plants that do survive only manage it through striking adaptations — the focus of the next section.
