Population pressure and land-use change
Rising population in fragile semi-arid regions raises demand for food, grazing and fuelwood, intensifying cropping, livestock numbers and woodland clearance — the underlying driver of desertification.
The first challenge is population pressure. Arid and semi-arid environments are fragile — rainfall is low and unreliable, vegetation is sparse and soils are thin — so they can support only a limited number of people and animals. As population grows (through natural increase and in-migration), demand for food, grazing land, water and fuelwood rises, and land use changes to meet it. This is the underlying driver behind much of the degradation that follows.
- Over-cultivation. To feed more people, farmers crop the same land more intensively, shorten or abandon fallow periods, and push cultivation onto marginal land that is too dry. Without fallow, soil nutrients and structure are not allowed to recover, so fertility falls and the bare soil is exposed to erosion.
- Overgrazing. Larger herds of cattle, goats and sheep strip the sparse vegetation faster than it can regrow. Around wells and settlements especially, animals remove plant cover and trample and compact the soil.
- Fuelwood collection. With few alternatives, growing populations cut trees and shrubs for cooking and heating fuel. This removes the woody vegetation that protects and binds the soil.
- Water demand and irrigation. More people means more water abstracted from rivers and aquifers, and more land brought under irrigation — which, badly managed, leads to salinisation (see below).
The mechanism to remember: more people → more demand for food, grazing, fuel and water → more intensive land use (over-cultivation, overgrazing, clearance, irrigation) → vegetation and soil degradation. Population pressure rarely degrades the land on its own, but it sets off the human activities that, combined with drought, drive desertification.
- Arid/semi-arid environments are fragile (low, unreliable rainfall; sparse vegetation; thin soils) with a low carrying capacity.
- Population growth raises demand for food, grazing, fuelwood and water.
- Over-cultivation (shorter fallow, marginal land) exhausts and exposes the soil.
- Overgrazing strips and compacts vegetation and soil, especially around wells/settlements.
- Fuelwood collection and irrigation add further pressure; core chain: more people → more demand → intensified land use → degradation.
