Global distribution of hot arid and hot semi-arid environments
Hot deserts cluster around 15°–30° N and S, on western coasts and continental interiors; hot semi-arid land forms the transitional belt around them. Arid = under ~250 mm/yr; semi-arid = ~250–500 mm/yr.
Arid environments are defined by water shortage — precipitation is far lower than potential evapotranspiration, so there is a permanent water deficit. Geographers separate two degrees of dryness by annual rainfall:
- Hot arid (true hot desert): under about 250 mm of rain a year — too dry for continuous vegetation cover; surfaces are bare rock, stone or sand.
- Hot semi-arid: about 250–500 mm a year — enough for scrub, grassland or seasonal grazing, but still a marked water deficit. This is the transitional belt between the true desert and wetter climates.
Where they are. Hot arid and semi-arid environments are not scattered at random. They cluster in two situations:
- Around 15°–30° latitude (N and S) — the subtropical belts on either side of the tropical zone. The great hot deserts sit here.
- On western coasts and in continental interiors — coasts backed by cold currents, and the centres of large continents far from any ocean moisture.
Named hot arid environments: the Sahara (North Africa, the world's largest hot desert), the Arabian Desert, the Australian (interior) deserts, the Atacama (Pacific coast of Chile/Peru — one of the driest places on Earth) and the Namib (Atlantic coast of southern Africa).
Named hot semi-arid environments: the Sahel (the classic semi-arid belt along the southern edge of the Sahara, grading into savanna), and the margins of the other deserts — interior Australia's grasslands and the fringes of the Kalahari.

The key idea for 10.1.1 is that this distribution is not random: deserts repeat at roughly the same latitudes in both hemispheres because the global pressure and wind belts (section 10.1.3) place subsiding, drying air there — and the western-coast and continental-interior deserts add the influence of cold currents and continentality.
- Hot arid (hot desert) = under ~250 mm/yr; hot semi-arid = ~250–500 mm/yr (the transitional desert margin).
- Both cluster around 15°–30° N and S — the subtropical belts either side of the tropics.
- Also favoured on western coasts (cold currents) and in continental interiors (far from moisture).

- Named hot semi-arid: the Sahel (southern Sahara margin), grading into savanna.
- The distribution is symmetrical about the Equator because the same pressure belts recur in both hemispheres.
