The key still fitted, which somehow was the cruellest part. After eleven years I had expected the lock, like everything else, to have moved on without me, and instead it turned with the same small reluctant click it had always made, as though the house had been waiting up.

I did not go in. I stood on the step with my hand flat against the door I had sworn I would never open again, and I let myself remember — because that, I had decided on the long drive north, was the whole point of coming back. Not to enter. To remember properly, once, and then to drive away for good.

It had started, the way these things start, with something small: a letter, forwarded three times, the address in a handwriting I would have known blind. Inside, a single line. Come before the spring, while there is still something to come back to. No name. None was needed.

So here I was, eleven years and four hundred miles from the girl who had slammed this door, my hand on the wood, deciding. The lock had already decided. It was only me, now, who had not.

The fairground does not switch off so much as exhale. First the carousel: the calliope slurs its last few bars half a tone flat, the painted horses slow until you can read their chipped names — Conqueror, Duchess, a third whose letters have worn to a guess — and then they simply stop, mid-gallop, going nowhere with great dignity.

The lights go next, but not all at once. The great wheel sheds its rim of bulbs in arcs, segment by segment, until only the topmost car keeps a single stubborn red eye, and then that too blinks out. Along the empty avenue between the stalls the strings of bunting stir without anyone to see them.

The sounds shrink inward. The fryer ticks as its oil cools; a generator coughs once and dies; somewhere a tarpaulin is dragged across a counter with the long sigh of a curtain. The smell stays longest — sugar and diesel and trampled grass — hanging over the churned mud after the noise has gone.

By the time the last van pulls away, the field has taken itself back. Only the flattened circles in the grass remain, pale as old coins, to say that anything was ever here at all.

At dawn the bay belongs to the mud. The tide is out as far as it ever goes, and the estuary lies open like a hand — flat, grey-brown, glistening, scored with the channels the water cut on its way to the sea and will use again to return. It does not look like a place that is waiting. It looks abandoned, a thing the sea has finished with. The light is thin and lateral and finds every ridge of mud, so that the whole expanse seems hammered out of pewter, and the few stranded boats lean at the angles of the drunk and the dead.

This is the hour of the birds. Oystercatchers stitch the margins with their long red bills, working the mud for what the night left; a curlew unrolls its single bubbling note across the silence, and the silence takes it and gives nothing back. There is no sound of water at all. You would not believe, standing here, that the sea has any claim on this ground.

By mid-morning the first lie is exposed. Far out, where the mud meets the pale band of the horizon, a thin bright line has appeared that was not there before. It does not seem to move. Watch it for a minute and it has not moved; look away, look back, and it is nearer, the way the hour hand of a clock is only ever caught in the act of having moved. The channels fill first, quietly, from below — water arriving in the low places before the high ones notice — so that the mudflats become, without any drama, a chequerboard of bright and dull, and then a scatter of islands, and then a memory of islands.

The turn, when it comes, comes everywhere at once. The sea does not advance in a line; it rises, it seeps, it floods the cut channels from beneath and laps the high banks from in front, and the stranded boats, which all morning lay like wreckage, begin one by one to shift, to right themselves, to remember that they float. A buoy that has hung slack on its chain swings round to face the incoming weight of water. The birds lift, reluctant, and resettle higher, and lift again, conceding the ground foot by foot to a thing that does not hurry because it does not need to.

And then the bay is simply full. It happens, as the largest changes do, in the moment you were not watching. Where there was mud there is now a wide grey-blue plane wrinkled with light, slapping companionably at the harbour wall, lifting the boats to the level of the road, erasing the channels, the ridges, the stranded angles of the morning as though none of it had ever been. The estuary that lay open like an abandoned hand has closed, and the surface gives back the sky, and there is no seam, anywhere, to show where the land used to be.

It will go out again. That is the only thing the full tide cannot hide: that it is already, even now, at the top of its reach, beginning the long imperceptible decision to leave. But for this one hour the sea has the whole bay, and holds it, brimming, the way you hold a held breath — knowing, even as you hold it, that you will have to let it go.

My controlling structural decision was to organise a plotless description as a TIME-LAPSE through the tidal cycle, so that the shape of the natural process — low water, turn, full, the beginning of the ebb — would supply the arc that a description otherwise lacks. I wanted the reader to experience a designed movement, not a list, and I therefore assigned each paragraph a clear position in time: paragraph one is the dead low tide, paragraph three the first filling of the channels, paragraph four the turn, paragraph five the full bay. This sequencing is the spine of the piece.

To make the movement feel like change rather than mere sequence, I paced it through a deliberate contrast of SCENE and SUMMARY. I expanded the slow, almost imperceptible filling ('look away, look back, and it is nearer, the way the hour hand of a clock is only ever caught in the act of having moved') into near-real-time observation, while compressing the completion into a single short statement — 'And then the bay is simply full' — so that the largest change arrives, deliberately, in the gap the reader was not watching. The pacing is meant to mime how tides actually deceive the eye.

I used a sustained MOTIF of personification to bind the separate paragraphs into one whole: the estuary 'like a hand' that 'lies open' at the start and has 'closed' by the climax, and the sea that 'does not hurry because it does not need to'. Running this single conceit across the piece was a structural choice as much as a linguistic one — it is what makes the description feel like one organism rather than five unconnected snapshots.

Finally, I chose a CIRCULAR-tending close rather than a flat stop: the final paragraph turns the reader's attention to the ebb already beginning, and the closing simile of the held breath echoes the cyclical sense of the opening, so the piece feels completed as a designed whole. If I were to revise, I would tighten paragraph two, since pausing on the birds slightly delays the central movement of the tide and risks loosening the arc I was trying to control.

The lighthouse keeper's daughter is ninety-one and she is teaching me to fold a flag.

We are in the day room of the home, the television muttering to no one, and her hands — spotted, certain — move through the triangles without her having to look. Corner to corner, she says. The blue stays out. Always the blue stays out. I write it down because I am here to write down everything she remembers, for the museum, before there is no one left who does. She watches me write, and something flickers, and she says: there was a night the lamp went out. And then she is no longer ninety-one.

She is fourteen, and it is 1948, and the storm has been hammering the rock for two days. Her father has not slept. The lamp is the whole of their lives — without the lamp the freighters cannot read the teeth of the reef, and the keeper's single duty, the duty he wears like a second skin, is that the lamp does not go out. So when the mechanism jams at the worst hour of the worst night, and her father's hands — big, slow, terrified hands — cannot free the gear, it is her small hands that reach into the works while he holds the lever, her small hands in the dark with the storm trying to take the tower, and it is she who frees it, and the beam swings out again across the black water, and somewhere a ship she will never see does not die on the reef.

She does not tell it as a triumph. That is what I notice, writing. She tells it flatly, the way you report a fact you have carried too long to lift. Her father, she says, never spoke of it. Not once. The next morning he folded the storm-flag that had flown the warning, blue corner out, always the blue stays out, and handed it to her without a word, and that was the only medal she was ever going to get, and she understood that, even at fourteen, and she has understood it for seventy-seven years.

Corner to corner, she says now, in the day room, and her certain spotted hands smooth the last fold flat. The blue stays out. She gives me the folded flag to hold and it is exactly, she says, the weight she remembers — though it is a different flag, in a different country, and her father has been dead for fifty years.

I came to record what she remembered. I write down: the lamp, the storm, the gear, the flag. But I do not write down the thing I have actually learned, here in the muttering day room, which is that the past is not a place she visits. It is the lever she is still holding. It is the small hands in the dark. We are not, the two of us, in the day room at all. We are on the rock, in 1948, and the beam is swinging out across the water, and it has never once, in seventy-seven years, been allowed to go out.

Corner to corner, she says. And the blue stays out.

My governing structural decision was to use a FRAME narrative — a present-day frame (the museum interview in the day room) enclosing an embedded flashback to 1948 — because the story's meaning is precisely that, for this character, the past is not enclosed at all. I wanted the FORM to argue with its own premise: a frame that is supposed to hold the past safely 'inside' it, but cannot. The structure is therefore not decoration; it carries the theme.

To keep the non-linear movement CONTROLLED, I signposted the shift into the past unmistakably rather than relying on the reader to infer it. The hinge sentence — 'And then she is no longer ninety-one. She is fourteen, and it is 1948' — uses a clear temporal marker and a present-tense pivot so the reader is never unsure when they are. I made this choice deliberately because, in my preparation, I knew that an unsignposted flashback is the commonest way a non-linear structure confuses a reader and loses the very marks it is reaching for.

I controlled PACE across the two timelines through scene and summary. I expanded the storm into a full dramatised scene (the jammed gear, the small hands in the dark) because it is the emotional and structural climax, while compressing the intervening 'seventy-seven years' into single clauses. The deliberate asymmetry — minutes given more words than decades — signals to the reader which moment the whole piece is built around.

I bound the two timelines with a recurring MOTIF, the flag-folding refrain 'the blue stays out', placed at the opening, at the heart of the 1948 memory, and at the close. Repetition was a structural choice: each return re-charges the phrase with new meaning, so that by the final line it carries the father's unspoken acknowledgement, the daughter's lifelong understanding, and the story's claim about memory all at once. This also creates a CIRCULAR structure, ending where it began but transformed.

Finally, I withheld the story's true subject — that she is not remembering the past but still living it — until the penultimate paragraph, so the REVEAL functions as the structural climax of the frame, recolouring the opening day-room scene retrospectively. If I were to revise, I would consider cutting the explicit line 'the past is not a place she visits', since the structure already enacts that idea and stating it risks telling the reader what the form has already shown.
