Acidic reactions and the CO₂ test
React with metals, bases and carbonates; effervescence with carbonate marks a carboxylic acid.
Carboxylic acids are weak acids but show all the usual acid reactions:
- Metal:
- Base:
- Carbonate:
The effervescence (CO₂) with a carbonate is a key identifying reaction — and it distinguishes a carboxylic acid from a phenol, which is too weak to release CO₂.
- React with metals, bases and carbonates.
- CO₂ with carbonate = carboxylic acid (not phenol).
- All form a carboxylate salt.
