Starter: odd one out
Teacher
Write the three sets on the board one at a time. Give students 30 seconds per set, then ask two or three for their answer and their reason. Accept any well-argued answer, then steer to the intended one. Close by asking: "Is 1 a prime number?" and take a quick vote — it sets up the main misconception for later.
Students
Write the odd one out and a one-line reason in your exercise book, then hold it up or tell a partner when asked (mini whiteboards work too, if your class has them).
What to do
Find the odd one out in each set and write one line saying why. Then answer: is a prime number? Check your answers before moving on.
