Renewable vs non-renewable
Finite vs replenishable.
Non-renewable. Finite reserves; can be exhausted. Coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear (uranium).
Renewable. Replenished naturally on human timescales. Solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass, tidal, wave.
Current mix. Fossil fuels still dominate (~80% of global primary energy). Renewables (excluding hydro) ~10%. Nuclear ~5%.
Trends. Renewables growing fast; solar costs fell ~90% 2010-2023. China leads renewable capacity additions.
Cambridge tip. Mark scheme rewards naming MULTIPLE examples of each.
- Non-renewable: coal, oil, gas, nuclear.
- Renewable: solar, wind, hydro, geothermal, biomass.
- Fossil fuels still dominate.
