Types of aid
Different sources, different purposes.
Bilateral. Country-to-country. UK aid to Bangladesh. May come with strings — donor political/economic interests.
Multilateral. Many countries via international bodies. World Bank loans, IMF, UN funds. Less politically tied but conditions still attached.
Emergency / short-term. Disaster relief. Food, water, shelter after disasters. Examples: 2010 Haiti earthquake aid; 2023 Türkiye-Syria earthquake aid.
Long-term / development. Capacity-building over years. Schools, hospitals, infrastructure. Gates Foundation eradicating polio; UK CDC funding African businesses.
NGO aid. Oxfam, Save the Children, Water Aid. Smaller-scale but locally targeted.
Tied vs untied. Tied aid requires recipient to spend it on donor's goods/companies — controversial; untied is more flexible.
Cambridge tip. Mark scheme rewards NAMED examples of each type.
