Four shapes, four demographic stories.
Wide-base / expanding. Triangular. High BR + high DR. Many young; few old. DTM Stage 2. Example: Niger, Uganda.
Bell-shaped / contracting. Even widths; narrower at top. Falling BR + DR. DTM Stage 3-4. Example: UK, USA.
Top-heavy / ageing. Narrower base, wider middle/top. Low BR + low DR. DTM Stage 5. Example: Japan, Germany.
Stationary / mature. Vertical sides. Stable population. Example: Sweden, Denmark.
