Core food and drink vocabulary — learn it with the article
Every food noun has a gender; memorise the word together with le, la or l'.
The single most useful habit in this whole topic is to learn every food word together with its article — le, la or l'. The gender almost never matches anything logical in English, so the only safe way is to store le pain (the bread) and la pomme (the apple) as whole units in your memory.
Here is the core vocabulary, with a plain-English pronunciation respelling.

Worked mini-example. You want to say "I like bread and cheese". The nouns are le pain and le fromage. Because you are speaking generally, French keeps the article: J'aime le pain et le fromage (I like bread and cheese). Notice English drops 'the', but French keeps le.
- Store every noun with its article: le pain, la pomme, l'eau.
- Gender is not predictable from meaning — memorise it as part of the word.
- When you like/dislike food in general, French keeps the article: J'aime le chocolat.
- les is the plural article for both genders: les légumes, les frites.
