Male and Female Reproductive Systems
Know the name and function of each organ β examiners regularly ask for both in diagrams.
Male reproductive system:
| Organ | Function |
|---|---|
| Testes | Produce sperm (by meiosis) and testosterone |
| Epididymis | Sperm mature and are stored |
| Sperm duct (vas deferens) | Carries sperm from epididymis to urethra |
| Seminal vesicles / prostate gland | Add fluids to sperm β semen |
| Urethra | Carries semen (during ejaculation) or urine (separately) out of body |
| Penis | Deposits semen in vagina during intercourse |
Female reproductive system:
| Organ | Function |
|---|---|
| Ovaries | Produce eggs (by meiosis) and oestrogen, progesterone |
| Oviduct (Fallopian tube) | Carries egg from ovary to uterus; site of fertilisation |
| Uterus (womb) | Site of implantation and fetal development |
| Endometrium | Lining of uterus β shed in menstruation if no pregnancy |
| Cervix | Muscular ring at bottom of uterus |
| Vagina | Receives penis; birth canal |
- Testes β sperm. Ovaries β eggs + hormones.
- Fertilisation in oviduct. Implantation in uterus.
- Oviduct β uterus β common confusion in exam diagrams.
