The Seven Characteristics — MRSGREN
Every living organism carries out all seven. Any one missing casts doubt on classification as living.
Use the mnemonic MRSGREN to recall all seven in order:
| Letter | Characteristic | Precise meaning |
|---|---|---|
| M | Movement | A change in position of all or part of the organism (locomotion in animals; tropisms in plants) |
| R | Respiration | Chemical release of energy from organic molecules (glucose) INSIDE cells |
| S | Sensitivity | Detection of, and response to, changes in the environment (stimuli) |
| G | Growth | A PERMANENT increase in size and DRY MASS by the production of new cells |
| R | Reproduction | Production of offspring — sexually (with fertilisation) or asexually (without) |
| E | Excretion | Removal from the body of WASTE PRODUCTS of METABOLISM (COâ‚‚, urea, excess water) |
| N | Nutrition | Taking in organic molecules for energy, growth, and repair (autotrophic or heterotrophic) |
Why ALL seven? An organism must show all seven to be considered living. Lack of even one calls classification into question.
- MRSGREN — Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion, Nutrition.
- All seven must be present for an organism to be classified as living.
- Plants show all seven — including movement (tropisms) and respiration.
