Entrepreneurs and what they do
Take risks. Organise factors. Innovate. Persist.
An entrepreneur is someone who STARTS and RUNS a business. They organise the factors of production and take the financial risk in pursuit of profit.
Common characteristics.
- Risk-taking. They invest savings, mortgage homes, work without salary in early stages.
- Innovation / creativity. Spotting opportunities others miss; creating new products, services or business models.
- Determination / persistence. Long hours, setbacks, financial pressure β entrepreneurs need stamina.
- Leadership. Inspiring and managing employees as the business grows.
- Financial management. Tracking costs, cash flow, profit.
- Communication skills. Negotiating with suppliers, persuading investors, selling to customers.
The role of a business plan. Most successful entrepreneurs write a BUSINESS PLAN before launching:
- Executive summary.
- Description of products/services.
- Market analysis (target customers, competitors, demand).
- Marketing plan.
- Operations plan.
- Financial forecasts (sales, cash flow, break-even).
- Funding requirements.
The plan helps the entrepreneur THINK THROUGH the business AND helps secure investors / loans.
Cambridge tip. Mark scheme rewards naming a characteristic AND giving an example of how it helps. 'Risk-taking' alone scores half β 'risk-taking, e.g. willing to invest savings without guarantee of return' scores full.
- Risk-taking + innovation + persistence.
- Plus leadership, financial sense, communication.
- Business plan helps both planning AND securing finance.
