Organisational structure
Hierarchy, span of control and chain of command together describe a firm's shape.
Organisational chart. A diagram showing roles and reporting relationships. Lines connect each subordinate to their direct manager.
Hierarchy. The layers of authority. CEO at the top → senior managers → middle managers → supervisors → operatives.
Span of control. How many subordinates DIRECTLY report to a manager. WIDE span = many; NARROW span = few.
Chain of command. Number of layers from top to bottom. TALL structure = many layers; FLAT structure = few.
Wide span / flat structure pros: cheaper (fewer managers), faster top-to-bottom communication, more autonomy for staff. Narrow span / tall structure pros: closer supervision, easier control of complex operations, clearer career paths.
Cambridge tip. Mark scheme distinguishes span (sideways) from chain (vertical). Mixing them is a common error.
- Span = how many report to one manager.
- Chain = vertical layers.
- Wide span = flat = cheaper + faster.
