$M = I / A$ . One formula, three rearrangements.

Formula. $M = \dfrac{I}{A}.$

$M$ = magnification (no units).
$I$ = image size (size of the cell on paper or screen).
$A$ = actual size (real size of the object).

Rearrangements.

$A = I / M$ (find actual size from image and magnification).
$I = A \times M$ (find image size from actual and magnification).

Worked. Image of a cell is $40\,\text{mm}$ wide. Magnification is $\times 1000$ . Find actual size.

$A = I/M = 40/1000 = 0.04\,\text{mm} = 40\,\mu\text{m}$ .

Worked. Cell is $5\,\mu\text{m}$ wide; image is $50\,\text{mm}$ . Find magnification.

Convert: $50\,\text{mm} = 50000\,\mu\text{m}$ .
$M = I/A = 50000/5 = 10000$ → $\times 10000$ .

Always convert to the SAME units before dividing. This is the most-failed step.
