Prime factorisation

Every integer greater than 1 has a unique prime factorisation — find it using a factor tree or repeated division.

A prime number has exactly two factors: 1 and itself. The first few primes are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 …

Prime factorisation expresses any integer greater than 1 as a product of primes. The AQA spec calls this the unique factorisation theorem — there is exactly one such product (up to ordering).

Method — factor tree for 360:

$360 \div 2 = 180, \quad 180 \div 2 = 90, \quad 90 \div 2 = 45, \quad 45 \div 3 = 15, \quad 15 \div 3 = 5$

So $360 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 \times 3 \times 3 \times 5 = 2^3 \times 3^2 \times 5$ .

Always write the answer in index (power) notation, with the prime bases in ascending order. AQA mark schemes require this form.

Factor tree for 360: keep dividing by the smallest prime until every leaf (green) is prime. Leaves multiply to give 360 = 2³ × 3² × 5.

Always divide by the smallest prime first (usually 2, then 3, then 5, ...).
Stop dividing when you reach a prime — it cannot be factorised further.
Write repeated factors in index form: $2 \times 2 \times 2 = 2^3$ .
Check your answer by multiplying all the prime factors back together.

Common pitfall

Including 1 as a prime factor. 1 is not a prime number — the definition requires exactly two distinct factors.

HCF and LCM from prime factorisation

Shared primes (lower power) give HCF; all primes (higher power) give LCM.

Once you have prime factorisations you can read off HCF and LCM directly. No listing needed — this method works for any size of number.

Example: Find the HCF and LCM of 360 and 126.

$360 = 2^3 \times 3^2 \times 5$ $126 = 2 \times 3^2 \times 7$

HCF — take each prime that appears in both factorisations, using the lower power:

$\text{HCF}(360, 126) = 2^1 \times 3^2 = 2 \times 9 = 18$

LCM — take every prime that appears in either factorisation, using the higher power:

$\text{LCM}(360, 126) = 2^3 \times 3^2 \times 5 \times 7 = 8 \times 9 \times 5 \times 7 = 2520$

Useful check: $\text{HCF} \times \text{LCM} = a \times b$ for any two positive integers $a$ and $b$ :

$18 \times 2520 = 45360 = 360 \times 126 \checkmark$

HCF: shared primes, lower powers — intersection of prime factorisations.
LCM: all primes, higher powers — union of prime factorisations.
AQA questions often ask you to show your prime factorisation working even if the numbers are small.
The HCF × LCM = product check is a quick way to catch arithmetic errors.

Common pitfall

Using the higher power for HCF or the lower power for LCM. A good memory hook: HCF is Humble (takes the smaller power), LCM is Large (takes the larger power).

Order of operations (BIDMAS)

Brackets, then Indices, then Division/Multiplication left to right, then Addition/Subtraction left to right.

AQA expects you to apply BIDMAS correctly without a calculator on Paper 1 and to use it correctly when entering expressions on a scientific calculator on Papers 2 and 3.

Order:

Brackets — evaluate everything inside brackets first.
Indices (powers and roots).
Division and Multiplication — left to right (equal priority).
Addition and Subtraction — left to right (equal priority).

Example: $3 + 4^2 \div (2 \times 4) - 1$

Brackets: $2 \times 4 = 8$
Indices: $4^2 = 16$
Division: $16 \div 8 = 2$
Addition/Subtraction left to right: $3 + 2 - 1 = 4$

Calculator trap: typing $8 \div 2 \times 4$ gives $16$ (left to right), not $1$ (if you wrongly do multiplication first). Division and multiplication have equal priority — evaluate left to right.

Division and multiplication have equal priority — go left to right.
Addition and subtraction have equal priority — go left to right.
A fraction bar acts like brackets: $\dfrac{3+5}{4-2}$ means $(3+5) \div (4-2)$ .
On a calculator, use brackets liberally to ensure the machine applies the right order.

Common pitfall

Always doing multiplication before division. They are equal — the one that appears first (reading left to right) goes first.

Powers and roots — integer indices

Recognise and calculate squares, cubes, higher powers and their roots; use index laws.

Key powers to know by heart for Paper 1 (non-calculator):

Index laws — the three laws you must apply fluently:

$a^m \times a^n = a^{m+n}$ $a^m \div a^n = a^{m-n}$ $(a^m)^n = a^{mn}$

Special indices: $a^0 = 1 \quad (a \neq 0), \qquad a^{-n} = \frac{1}{a^n}, \qquad a^{1/n} = \sqrt[n]{a}$

Any non-zero number to the power 0 is 1.
A negative index means the reciprocal: $5^{-2} = \dfrac{1}{25}$ .
When multiplying powers of the same base, add the indices.
When dividing powers of the same base, subtract the indices.
When raising a power to a power, multiply the indices.

Common pitfall

$2^3 \neq 6$ . Indices mean repeated multiplication ( $2^3 = 2 \times 2 \times 2 = 8$ ), not repeated addition.

Fractional and negative indices

Fractional indices are roots; negative indices are reciprocals — combine both for compound index questions.

These appear regularly on AQA Higher Paper 1 and are one of the topics where marks separate grade 7+ students from grade 5 students.

Fractional indices: $a^{1/n} = \sqrt[n]{a} \qquad \text{e.g. } 8^{1/3} = \sqrt[3]{8} = 2$ $a^{m/n} = \left(\sqrt[n]{a}\right)^m = \sqrt[n]{a^m} \qquad \text{e.g. } 27^{2/3} = \left(\sqrt[3]{27}\right)^2 = 3^2 = 9$

Always take the root first, then raise to the power — the numbers stay smaller and are easier to handle without a calculator.

Negative fractional indices — combine both rules: $a^{-m/n} = \frac{1}{a^{m/n}} = \frac{1}{\left(\sqrt[n]{a}\right)^m}$

Example: Evaluate $16^{-3/4}$ .

$16^{-3/4} = \frac{1}{16^{3/4}} = \frac{1}{\left(\sqrt[4]{16}\right)^3} = \frac{1}{2^3} = \frac{1}{8}$

For $a^{m/n}$ : root first ( $n$ th root), power second (raise to $m$ ).
For a negative index: flip to a reciprocal after evaluating the positive version.
If you get a non-integer root on Paper 1, you have likely chosen the wrong base — re-check.
AQA often uses bases 4, 8, 9, 16, 25, 27, 32, 64, 125 — know their roots.

Common pitfall

Raising to the power first and then rooting: $27^{2/3} \neq (27^2)^{1/3}$ in practice is the same mathematically, but $27^2 = 729$ is unwieldy. Always root first.

Surds

Surds are irrational roots — simplify using $\sqrt{ab} = \sqrt{a}\sqrt{b}$, collect like surds, and rationalise denominators.

A surd is a root that cannot be simplified to a rational number. $\sqrt{2}$ , $\sqrt{3}$ , $\sqrt{5}$ are surds; $\sqrt{4} = 2$ is not.

Simplifying surds — find the largest perfect-square factor: $\sqrt{72} = \sqrt{36 \times 2} = \sqrt{36} \times \sqrt{2} = 6\sqrt{2}$

Collecting like surds — treat $\sqrt{n}$ like an algebraic letter: $3\sqrt{5} + 2\sqrt{5} = 5\sqrt{5} \qquad \text{but} \qquad 3\sqrt{5} + 2\sqrt{3} \text{ cannot be simplified}$

Expanding surd brackets: $(3 + \sqrt{2})(3 - \sqrt{2}) = 9 - 2 = 7 \qquad \text{(difference of two squares)}$ $(2 + \sqrt{3})^2 = 4 + 4\sqrt{3} + 3 = 7 + 4\sqrt{3}$

Rationalising the denominator — multiply numerator and denominator by the surd (simple denominator) or the conjugate (binomial denominator):

$\frac{5}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{5}{\sqrt{3}} \times \frac{\sqrt{3}}{\sqrt{3}} = \frac{5\sqrt{3}}{3}$

$\frac{4}{3 - \sqrt{2}} = \frac{4(3 + \sqrt{2})}{(3 - \sqrt{2})(3 + \sqrt{2})} = \frac{4(3 + \sqrt{2})}{9 - 2} = \frac{4(3 + \sqrt{2})}{7}$

Always simplify by taking out the largest perfect-square factor in one step.
Only like surds (same radicand) can be added or subtracted.
$(a+\sqrt{b})(a-\sqrt{b}) = a^2 - b$ — this is why the conjugate eliminates the surd in the denominator.
AQA mark schemes often award 1 mark for simplifying the surd and 1 mark for the final rationalised form.

Common pitfall

$\sqrt{a + b} \neq \sqrt{a} + \sqrt{b}$ . This is the most common surd error. For example, $\sqrt{9 + 16} = \sqrt{25} = 5$ , but $\sqrt{9} + \sqrt{16} = 3 + 4 = 7 \neq 5$ .

Standard form

Write very large or very small numbers as $A \times 10^n$ where $1 \leq A < 10$.

Standard form (AQA spec ref N9) is $A \times 10^n$ where $1 \leq A < 10$ and $n$ is an integer.

Converting to standard form:

$4\,500\,000 = 4.5 \times 10^6$ (move decimal point 6 places left → positive $n$ )
$0.000037 = 3.7 \times 10^{-5}$ (move decimal point 5 places right → negative $n$ )

Converting from standard form:

$6.02 \times 10^{23}$ : move point 23 places right → $602\underbrace{00\ldots0}_{21}$
$1.38 \times 10^{-3}$ : move point 3 places left → $0.00138$

Arithmetic in standard form (Paper 1 — without a calculator):

Multiply: $(3 \times 10^4) \times (2 \times 10^5) = 6 \times 10^9$

Divide: $\dfrac{8 \times 10^7}{4 \times 10^3} = 2 \times 10^4$

Add/Subtract: convert to the same power of 10 first: $(4.5 \times 10^6) + (3 \times 10^5) = (4.5 \times 10^6) + (0.3 \times 10^6) = 4.8 \times 10^6$

The coefficient $A$ must satisfy $1 \leq A < 10$ — check this after every conversion.
For multiplication: multiply the $A$ values and add the $n$ values.
For division: divide the $A$ values and subtract the $n$ values.
If the result of multiplication gives $A \geq 10$ , adjust: e.g., $15 \times 10^3 = 1.5 \times 10^4$ .

Common pitfall

Writing $0.45 \times 10^7$ and thinking it is in standard form. It is not — the coefficient must be $\geq 1$ . Correct form is $4.5 \times 10^6$ .
