Schools run IGCSE alongside a national curriculum in one of two ways. Some teach required national subjects inside the IGCSE timetable; others run two streams with a transfer point. The rules differ by country. India recognises five IGCSE passes as Standard 10, Malaysia requires Bahasa Melayu and History, Kenya requires Kiswahili and Kenyan history, and Egypt weights Arabic and history.
This guide is for leaders; parents comparing systems will find the practical detail in each country guide.
What does each country require?
| Country | National requirement for IGCSE schools | Moving between systems |
|---|---|---|
| India | No federal subject requirement found; check state language rules. AIU “recognises passes in five Cambridge IGCSE / Cambridge O Level subjects including English Language as equivalent to Standard 10” | CBSE admits to Class XI on an equivalent exam “recognised by this Board as equivalent”; “no admission shall be taken in Class XII directly” |
| Malaysia | Malaysian students must study Bahasa Melayu and History “using the national curriculum” | SPM described as optional, but “compulsory” for public university entry through UPU |
| Kenya | Kiswahili and Kenyan history for all international schools, under a 2016 directive | The Basic Education Bill 2026 would require Cabinet Secretary approval for foreign systems |
| Egypt | Arabic, Religious Studies and social studies or History at each stage; Arabic and History count 10% each of the international certificate grade | Grade 12 transfers into international schools banned from 2026/27; from 2027/28, Grade 10 only |

IGCSE vs CBSE: how do schools in India run both?
Usually as two streams, with Class 11 as the crossing point. Cambridge IGCSE and CBSE differ in structure: IGCSE is subject-based, with grades per subject and percentage uniform marks for Indian admissions; CBSE is a national board with its own scheme. For a student moving from IGCSE to CBSE Class 11, CBSE’s bye-laws require an exam “recognised by this Board as equivalent”, and students from schools abroad need “an eligibility certificate” from CBSE. Because CBSE admits no one “in Class XII directly”, the move has to happen at Class 11. For how Indian universities read IGCSE and A Level, see Cambridge IGCSE in India.
IGCSE vs SPM: what does Malaysia’s 2026 policy change?
It makes Malaysian students in international schools study national subjects too. The Ministry of Education clarified in January 2026 that they “must study Bahasa Melayu and History using the national curriculum”. SPM was described as optional for school purposes, but the Higher Education Minister said “SPM remains compulsory” for public university entry through UPU. So Malaysian students aiming at public universities may need SPM Bahasa Melayu and History alongside IGCSE. See the Malaysia guide.
How do Kenyan IGCSE schools fit CBC?
By teaching Kiswahili and Kenyan history, and watching the Bill. In November 2016, The Standard reported that “it will now be mandatory for all international schools that do not follow the Kenyan curriculum to teach Kenyan history and Kiswahili”. Kenya’s Basic Education Bill 2026 would add approval: “a person or institution seeking to offer a foreign system of education in Kenya shall apply to the Cabinet Secretary for approval”. The Bill had not passed by September 2026. See the Kenya guide.
How do Egyptian IG schools fit Thanaweya Amma rules?
Through national subjects that carry real weight. Under the 2024 decree, Arabic, Religious Studies and History are taught from Grade 10 to 12. Arabic and History count 10% each of the international certificate grade, which is treated as equivalent to the Thanaweya Amma, through a Ministry exam. Transfers into international secondary schools are narrowing to Grade 10 only from 2027/28. See Egypt’s new rules.
What timetable models work?
Three models, which are our recommendations:
| Model | How it works | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Integrated | National subjects taught as timetabled subjects inside the IGCSE week | National subjects are required for all students of that nationality (Malaysia, Egypt, Kenya) |
| Parallel streams | Separate IGCSE and national-board streams, with a set transfer point | The school offers both boards (common in India) |
| Supplementary | National exam preparation after school or in a reduced IGCSE load | A minority of students need a national exam for university entry (e.g. SPM for UPU) |
Whichever model you use, protect IGCSE teaching time. At about 130 guided learning hours per IGCSE subject, a student taking seven IGCSEs plus two national subjects has a full timetable. Schools may need to reduce the number of IGCSEs each student takes.
What should leaders plan each year?
- Count students by nationality and target university, since requirements often follow citizenship.
- Timetable national subjects first, then fit IGCSE options.
- Staff national subjects properly, with teachers qualified in the national curriculum.
- Fix transfer points in writing: Class 11 in India, Grade 10 in Egypt.
- Check each year for new rules, especially Kenya’s Bill and Malaysia’s implementation detail.
How schools do this with AI Buddy
When national subjects take timetable time, IGCSE lessons shrink. AI Buddy gives students past-paper-style Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel practice with instant marking, so practice continues between lessons. Teachers get topic data to focus limited contact time. National subjects remain the school’s own teaching.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between IGCSE and CBSE?
IGCSE is a subject-based international qualification from Cambridge or Pearson; CBSE is India’s national board. India’s AIU recognises five IGCSE passes, including English Language, as equivalent to Standard 10.
Can a student move from IGCSE to CBSE?
Yes, at Class 11, with an exam CBSE recognises as equivalent. CBSE does not admit students directly into Class XII.
Do IGCSE schools in Malaysia have to teach Bahasa Melayu?
Yes, for Malaysian students, using the national curriculum, under the policy announced in January 2026.
How do schools run two curricula at once?
By integrating required national subjects into the IGCSE timetable, running parallel streams with a set transfer point, or adding national exam preparation as a supplement.
