Cambridge IGCSE in India: Board Recognition, Results and What School Leaders Need to Know

How Cambridge IGCSE and A Level schools operate in India: AIU recognition of IGCSE as Standard 10, A Level equivalence to 10+2, the March exam series and its 2026 results, JEE and NEET language rules, percentage uniform marks and how fees work.

Cambridge IGCSE is recognised in India as equivalent to Standard 10. The Association of Indian Universities (AIU) accepts five IGCSE passes, including English Language, and Cambridge International A Level is certified as equivalent to 10+2. Over 700 Indian schools offer Cambridge. The March series, aligned to the Indian academic year, had over 91,000 entries in 2026.

How is Cambridge IGCSE recognised in India?

As equivalent to the national Class 10 and Class 12 certificates. Cambridge’s India recognition FAQ (2025) says “the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) recognises passes in five Cambridge IGCSE / Cambridge O Level subjects including English Language as equivalent to Standard 10”. For the senior level, “an equivalence certificate confirms that your Cambridge International A Level qualification is equivalent to the 10+2 qualification from any Indian exam board”. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel are both listed as international members of COBSE, the Council of Boards of School Education (COBSE).

Equivalence is a floor, not an admission guarantee. Cambridge notes that “institutions are free to set separate eligibility conditions” above it.

Do students need an equivalence certificate?

Often not. Cambridge’s FAQ says students can apply to the University Grants Commission at equivalence.ugc.ac.in. It adds that “most Indian institutions, including Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), do not require an equivalence certificate if you have taken exams in India”. AIU’s own page still describes equivalence certificates for “students having completed their School Level Examinations from Foreign Boards” (AIU). Families should check which portal their target institution expects.

AIU does not grant equivalence to students “who undertake studies in private mode and have not enrolled in a school”, according to Cambridge’s earlier FAQ. This makes school enrolment itself important for recognition.

How do Indian universities read Cambridge results?

As percentages, not grades. Students in India receive a percentage uniform mark for each subject alongside the grade, so “grades do not need to be converted”. For an IGCSE aggregate, Cambridge says to “add up each percentage uniform mark and divide it by the total number of subjects”.

Entrance exams add language rules:

ExamCambridge’s guidance
JEE (Main)“Requires the study of one language”; met by any Cambridge A Level language or any AS Level English Language subject; IELTS/TOEFL not accepted in lieu
NEET-UGStudents “are required to pass any AS Level English Language syllabus”; Cambridge advises sitting AS Level English in Year 12
IITsTop 20 percentile of the board cohort or 75% aggregate; Cambridge “does not publish or provide information on the top 20 percentile”

The practical implication is to plan AS Level English into the timetable for science students aiming at medicine or engineering. Without it, they may be ineligible regardless of their science grades.

What is the Cambridge March series in India?

A third exam series, timed for Indian admissions. Cambridge says it is “the only international awarding body to hold a March exam series aligned to the Indian academic calendar, enabling students to meet local admission deadlines”. It is the largest of Cambridge’s three exam series in India each year (Cambridge, 19 May 2026).

March 2026 seriesFigure
Total entriesOver 91,000, up 7%
Students and schoolsOver 23,000 students at 447 schools
AS & A Level entriesUp 12% (AS up 16%, A Level up 8%)
IGCSE entriesUp 6%
Most popular subjectsMathematics, Physics and Chemistry

In 2026, Cambridge also added a March series for Checkpoint tests, “better aligned to the academic year in India”. The March series in 2026 had results on 19 May.

IGCSE vs CBSE: what should leaders weigh?

Different structures, both recognised. IGCSE is subject-based, with passing grades “from A* to G” and a free choice of subjects. Recognition as Standard 10 requires five passes including English Language. CBSE is India’s national board, with its own subject scheme and exams. Many Indian families move between systems at Class 11, so leaders should explain equivalence and percentage marks clearly at admission.

How do Cambridge fees work for Indian schools?

By region, on request. Cambridge charges schools an application fee, annual programme fees and “a fee for each exam entry”, and asks schools to contact it “for full details of the fees for your region” (Cambridge). Cambridge does not publish rupee fees. Figures quoted by individual schools include their own charges. Budget for three series if the school uses March, June and November. For how Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel compare on fees and becoming a centre, see Cambridge vs Edexcel for schools.

What should Cambridge school leaders in India plan?

  1. Guarantee five IGCSE passes including English Language for every student, for Standard 10 equivalence.
  2. Timetable AS Level English for students heading to JEE or NEET.
  3. Choose the series deliberately. March suits Indian admission deadlines; June suits most overseas applications.
  4. Explain percentage uniform marks to families and college admissions offices.
  5. Keep students enrolled, not private, where AIU equivalence matters.
  6. Track entries growth, since AS & A Level demand is rising fastest.

How schools do this with AI Buddy
