A British school abroad gets British Schools Overseas (BSO) accreditation by arranging an inspection with an approved inspectorate and showing it meets the nine BSO standards. Since 15 July 2026, the approved inspectorates are Education Development Trust and ISI. Accreditation lasts three years, and the UK Department for Education (DfE) publishes accredited schools’ reports.

What is British Schools Overseas accreditation?

BSO is “DfE’s voluntary accreditation scheme for overseas schools” (GOV.UK). It shows that a school abroad meets standards aligned with those for independent schools in England. DfE is explicit that it “has no jurisdiction over schools operating outside England”. BSO is recognition, not regulation, and local regulators still apply.

Accreditation also affects recruitment. “Schools without BSO accreditation cannot offer statutory induction to ECTs”, meaning early career teachers. Accredited schools must also belong to one of the listed organisations to provide it: AoBSO, BSME, COBIS, FOBISIA, LAHC, NABSS or IAPS.

What are the British Schools Overseas standards?

There are nine parts, in Standards for British Schools Overseas (August 2023):

  1. Quality of education provided
  2. Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils
  3. Welfare, health and safety of pupils
  4. Suitability of staff, supply staff and proprietors
  5. Premises of and accommodation at schools
  6. Provision of information
  7. Manner in which complaints are handled
  8. Quality of leadership in and management of schools
  9. Minimum standards for boarding

Two principles run through them. First, “an essential element of the inspection is considering the extent to which the British character of the school is evident in its ethos, curriculum, teaching, care for pupils and pupils’ achievements”. Second, local law comes first: “Where there is a conflict between the standards and the host country laws, the laws of the host country take precedence”, and such a deviation “will not mean the school cannot achieve BSO accreditation”.

Who carries out BSO inspections in 2026?

Two inspectorates, after Penta International was removed on 15 July 2026. Ofsted “monitor these inspectorates and report on the quality of their inspections yearly”.

How does a school get BSO accreditation?

Four steps:

  1. Choose an inspectorate and arrange an inspection, or go through KHDA in Dubai.
  2. Prepare against the nine standards, including a self-evaluation.
  3. Be inspected. If the school meets the standards, it receives “a unique reference number” on the UK’s Get Information about Schools register.
  4. Publish the report. “Accredited schools are required to publish their most recent inspection report on their website.” DfE publishes the latest report for every accredited school.

If standards are not met at an ISI inspection, “there will be no published inspection report”. Provisional findings go to the head and DfE.

How does BSO accreditation stay current?

Through a new inspection every three years: “Maintaining BSO accreditation is conditional on a school having an inspection every 3 years.” DfE contacts schools 6 months before the three-year period ends and again 1 month before. Accreditation lapses the day after expiry unless there is a new report, an inspection in progress or an extension. DfE can also act mid-cycle over “safeguarding failings” or “extremism concerns”. Schools formerly inspected by Penta should book their next inspection early, because there are now only two providers.

How should a school prepare for a BSO inspection?

Prepare evidence standard by standard, and start with the parts that fail schools outright: safeguarding, staff suitability checks and premises. Then:

  • Quality of education (Part 1): show how the curriculum, teaching and assessment lead to progress, with attainment data by subject and year group.
  • British character: show where British curriculum, qualifications such as Cambridge or Pearson Edexcel, and British practice are evident, alongside local requirements.
  • Leadership (Part 8): a self-evaluation that matches the school’s data, and evidence of improvement since the last inspection.
  • Information and complaints (Parts 6–7): policies published and followed.

Schools also inspected by KHDA or ADEK can reuse much of the same evidence. See the Inspection & Accreditation hub and KHDA’s 2026-27 changes.

How schools do this with AI Buddy

AI Buddy supports the Part 1 evidence on quality of education. Every mock and practice paper is marked instantly and recorded per student, subject and topic. Leaders can show inspectors attainment, progress over time and how gaps are being closed, without assembling data the week before. Safeguarding, staffing, premises and leadership evidence remain the school’s own.
