Frequently Asked Questions

What pre-set essay formats are available?

Pre-sets include: A-Level Economics 25-mark essay (45 min), A-Level History essay (45 min), IB Paper 2 essay (45 min), GCSE 8/9-mark extended answer (12 min), IGCSE English 500-word response (35 min), A-Level Biology 9-mark essay (15 min), and a fully custom option where you set your own sections.

How does the traffic-light countdown work?

The timer starts green. When 20% of a section's time remains, it turns orange. At 10% (or if you go overtime), it turns red. This mirrors exam pressure and trains you to manage time instinctively.

Can I create custom section timings?

Yes. Choose 'Custom' from the preset menu and add as many sections as you need, giving each a name and a time in minutes. The timer will count down each section in order.

Is the essay log saved?

Yes. Your completed essay log is stored in your browser and persists between sessions. You can export it as a CSV file for review in Excel or Google Sheets.

Why should I practise timed essays?

Exam essays must be written under strict time pressure. Students who practise timed essays consistently develop better structure, more concise arguments, and the ability to allocate time between planning, writing and checking — all of which are examined skills.

Is this tool free?

Yes. The Essay Timer is completely free to use in your browser with no sign-up. The CSV export of your essay log is also free.
