How does Paper 1 change?
Paper 1 is reorganised into four equal questions, which Cambridge says will “help candidates to navigate the paper efficiently and use their exam time effectively”. Marks and timing stay the same.
- Question 1, Comprehension: now 20 marks, testing all five reading assessment objectives.
- Question 2, Summary: now 15 marks for reading and 5 for writing, with a new 5-mark element testing R2 and R3.
- Question 3, Short answer and language: word questions are now 2 marks, underlining is replaced by bold, and the language task answer is reduced to 200–250 words.
- Question 4, Extended response: 10 marks for reading and 10 for writing, with the answer reduced to 250–300 words.
The paper is still based on three texts, printed in an insert.
How does Paper 2 change?
Section A asks students to read less and adds a short reading question first. The reading texts are cut to 550–650 words. The task splits into:
- Question 1(a): a new 5-mark question assessing R3 and R4. R4 was not previously assessed on Paper 2.
- Question 1(b): the familiar directed writing task, with 10 marks for reading and 25 for writing.
Cambridge says 1(a) “will help students with their comprehension of the texts before they start the writing task”. In Section B, “the composition tasks remain unchanged”, although the marking criteria are updated.
What stays the same?
The qualification’s shape stays the same. Students still take Paper 1 plus either Paper 2 or the Component 3 coursework portfolio, and total marks and durations are unchanged. Speaking and Listening stays optional and separately endorsed. The exam series stay the same: June and November, plus March in India. Departments that use the coursework route keep three assignments with the same marks. They need to check the updated forms of writing and marking criteria.
When do the 0500 changes take effect, and what about 0990 and digital exams?
The revised 0500 is for exams in 2027, 2028 and 2029, with the first exam in March 2027 for India’s March series. Schools elsewhere meet it first in June 2027, so students sitting from June 2027 are already on the new syllabus. The 9–1 version, 0990, is also revised, with first exams in June 2027.
0500 is also listed under “Launching 2027” on Cambridge’s digital assessment roadmap. Cambridge has not said which papers or series. See our guide to Cambridge digital exams.
How should English departments prepare?
Start with the new mark allocations, because they change how teachers set and mark practice papers.
- Replace Paper 1 practice papers. Old papers no longer match the four-question structure. Use Cambridge’s updated specimen papers, which the syllabus says “will help your students become familiar with exam requirements and command words”.
- Re-teach pacing. Four equal questions change timing. Students used to a 30-mark first question need a new plan.
- Teach the new 1(a) and shorter answers. The Paper 1 language task and extended response now have lower word limits.
- Re-standardise marking. Every component has updated marking criteria, so run a standardisation session before the first mock.
- Check resources. Cambridge says textbooks “endorsed to support the syllabus for examination from 2027” are suitable.
