Cambridge Global Perspectives is a skills-based course in research, analysis, collaboration and communication, available from primary to A Level. Combined IGCSE and O Level entries rose 9% in June 2026. Most of the assessment is coursework: an individual report and a team project at IGCSE, and a 5,000-word research report at A Level. That makes staffing the main question.
Why are Global Perspectives entries growing?
Cambridge’s June 2026 results showed Global Perspectives among its growing subjects: “Entries for Cambridge Global Perspectives, a skills-focused subject, continue to grow, with combined IGCSE and O Level entries up 9% in June” (Cambridge, 18 August 2026). IGCSE entries overall grew 3%, so Global Perspectives is growing about three times as fast. Cambridge does not give reasons. The course’s focus on skills schools are asked to evidence, such as research, collaboration and independent learning, is the likely draw, in our view.
How is IGCSE Global Perspectives 0457 assessed?
Through three components, with 65% set or assessed in school. From the 0457 syllabus (for exams in 2025, 2026 and 2027):
| Component | What students do | Weight | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Written Exam | 1 hour 25 minutes, four compulsory source-based questions | 35% | Externally assessed |
| 2. Individual Report | Research a global issue; a report of “1500–2000 words” | 30% | “Internally set and externally marked” |
| 3. Team Project | Team: Explanation of Research and Planning (300–400 words) and Evidence of Action. Personal: Reflective Paper (750–1000 words) | 35% | “Internally assessed and externally moderated” |
Grades run A* to G, and the syllabus is designed for “about 130 guided learning hours”. Cambridge says students with A* to C “are well prepared to follow a wide range of courses including Cambridge International AS & A Level Global Perspectives & Research”.
How is AS & A Level Global Perspectives & Research 9239 assessed?
With an exam, an essay, a presentation and a research report. From the 9239 syllabus (for exams in 2026 to 2028):
| Component | What students do | AS weight | A Level weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Written Exam | 1 hour 30 minutes | 36% | 18% |
| 2. Essay | ”An essay in continuous prose of 1750–2000 words” | 32% | 16% |
| 3. Team Project | Individual presentation, “10 minutes maximum” (“Team presentations are not permitted”), plus a reflective paper | 32% | 16% |
| 4. Cambridge Research Report | ”A research report of up to 5000 words” and a research log | — | 50% |
All components are externally assessed. The AS “makes up the first half of the Cambridge International A Level course”. The syllabus notes that exams “are not available in the March series in India”.
What do the June 2026 A Level grades show?
That GP&R is harder to score highly in than most subjects. In Cambridge’s June 2026 world statistics, 1.0% of A Level Global Perspectives & Research candidates achieved A*, 4.4% A* to A, 33.4% A* to C and 87.9% A* to E (Cambridge). For comparison, A Level Mathematics was 16.9% A* and 74.3% A* to C. Schools adding GP&R should set expectations with students and families. The research report, worth half the A Level, needs sustained supervision.
How should a school staff Global Perspectives?
As a skills course that needs research supervision, not a content subject. Our recommendations:
| Question | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Who teaches it? | Teachers comfortable supervising research and marking extended writing. Humanities, English and science teachers all do it well |
| One specialist or a team? | A lead teacher with trained colleagues, so research supervision can be shared |
| Training | Cambridge’s syllabus-specific courses; see IGCSE teacher training in 2026 |
| Moderation | For 0457 Component 3, internal standardisation across teachers before sampling |
| Supervision time | Timetable individual check-ins for the Individual Report and the A Level research report |
| Library and sources | Access to credible sources, since every component is source-based |
The weakest point is usually authenticity. With so much coursework, the school’s AI and coursework policy matters. See the AI policy template.
How should it fit the timetable?
As a full subject, with project time. At about 130 hours for IGCSE, it needs the same time as any other IGCSE. The Team Project and Individual Report need blocks of time, not only single lessons. Some schools use Lower Secondary Global Perspectives to build skills before IGCSE. That reduces how much has to be taught from scratch in Years 10 and 11.
How schools do this with AI Buddy
Global Perspectives is mostly coursework and skills, so the main load falls on teacher supervision. AI Buddy supports the rest of a student’s IGCSE timetable with past-paper-style practice and instant marking, which frees lesson time in other subjects. Global Perspectives coursework itself must be the student’s own work, supervised under Cambridge’s rules. Ask us what AI Buddy covers for 0457 and 9239.
