Subject-specific grade boundaries for the May and November 2026 sessions are published by the IB after each session. Raw marks are converted to the 1–7 scale using these boundaries so that standards are consistent across sessions and regions.

Diploma Points: TOK & Extended Essay

Up to 3 bonus points from TOK and EE combined

Total Diploma score

Six subjects give 6 × 7 = 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A–E and combined to add 0–3 points. Maximum Diploma score is 45 points. Passing the Diploma requires meeting subject, TOK/EE, and overall point requirements.

Raw Marks, Grade Boundaries & the IB 1–7 Scale

How the IB turns examination performance into subject grades and a total out of 45 points.

From raw mark to 1–7 and 45 points

IB examiners first award a raw mark in each subject component. The IB then sets grade boundaries so that raw marks are converted to stable 1–7 grades for each subject and level (SL / HL).

Six subjects can give up to 42 points. Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay are graded A–E and combined to add 0–3 bonus points, giving the maximum 45 points. Behind the scenes, the same logic applies as with Cambridge or Edexcel: raw marks → boundaries → scaled grades.
