Raw Marks & UMS – How Edexcel Uses Them
What sits behind the grade boundaries for Pearson Edexcel International GCSE.
From raw mark to grade (and UMS where used)
In 2026, Edexcel still starts with a raw mark on each paper. Examiners then set grade boundaries for each International GCSE subject and session so that a particular raw score and above is a 9, 8, 7, and so on.
For some qualifications, Edexcel also converts raw marks to a Uniform Mark Scale (UMS) so that different units or exam sessions can be combined fairly. For linear 9–1 International GCSEs, Pearson publishes the raw-mark boundaries directly, but the logic is the same: raw mark → boundary → grade → (UMS / scaled mark where applicable).
